Bali Airport to the Gili Islands: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide

You've just landed at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in south Bali and the Gili Islands are the goal. The good news: it's a well-trodden route that thousands of travellers do every week. The thing to understand up front is that there's no direct boat from the airport — the journey is always two stages: a road transfer from DPS to a fast-boat harbour, then the fast boat across to Gili Trawangan, Gili Air or Gili Meno. Step 1: Choose your harbour first
Everything flows from this decision, so make it before you book anything. Two Bali harbours serve the Gilis, and they sit in different directions from the airport:

Step 2: Get from the airport to the harbour
You've got three sensible options for the road leg:
- Operator's included transfer. Many fast-boat tickets bundle a shuttle from set pick-up points. It's simple, but pick-ups run to the boat's schedule, not yours, and hotel-zone coverage varies — check what's included when you book.
- Private car / airport taxi. The most flexible and, with luggage or a family, often the most comfortable. Official airport taxis and pre-booked private drivers both work; agree the fare or use the official counter rather than a tout at arrivals.
- Ride-hailing (Grab / Gojek). Cheapest, but Bali restricts app pick-ups directly at the airport — you may need to walk to a designated point. Fine for the short Sanur run; a long haul to Padang Bai is usually nicer in a pre-booked car.
Whichever you choose, build in a buffer. South Bali traffic is unpredictable, and the drive to Padang Bai in particular can blow out by an hour. Aim to reach the harbour at least 60–90 minutes before your boat.
Step 3: Take the fast boat
At the harbour, check in with your operator, drop your main luggage where the crew directs, and board. A few things that make this leg smooth:

Timing: don't miss the last boat
This is the single most common mistake. Fast boats to the Gilis run mainly in the morning and early afternoon, and the last departures leave in the afternoon — there's nothing in the evening. If you land late in the day, the honest answer is usually:

Same journey in reverse — Gili boat back to Bali, then the road to the airport. The rule that catches people out: never book a Gili return for the same day as an international flight.
