Nusa Penida is the rugged, dramatic island off Bali's south-east coast, and it has become one of Indonesia's most photographed places. Think towering limestone cliffs, hidden white-sand coves, and the T-Rex-shaped headland of Kelingking Beach. Offshore, the cold currents draw manta rays and — in season — the strange, giant mola mola sunfish.
Most people visit on a day trip from Bali, but staying a night lets you beat the crowds to the famous viewpoints at sunrise.
Nusa Penida highlights
- Kelingking Beach — the iconic T-Rex Bay cliff
- Snorkel and dive with manta rays at Manta Point
- Angel's Billabong, Broken Beach and Crystal Bay
- Just ~45 minutes by fast boat from Sanur

Why go to Nusa Penida
The scenery is simply spectacular. Kelingking Beach ("T-Rex Bay"), Angel's Billabong, Broken Beach and Crystal Bay are world-famous for good reason, and the snorkelling and diving — especially with manta rays at Manta Point — are among the best around Bali.
The island is wilder and less developed than Bali, so roads can be rough and sights are spread out; a driver or scooter and an early start make all the difference.
Things to do
Hike down to Kelingking Beach, swim at Crystal Bay, snorkel with manta rays and turtles, chase waterfalls and clifftop viewpoints at Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach, and catch the sunset from the west coast. Snorkelling day-tours often combine several bays by boat.
