Which Nusa Penida Harbour? Banjar Nyuh, Buyuk, Sampalan & Kutampi Explained

If you've started booking a fast boat to Nusa Penida, you've probably noticed the arrival point isn't always called "Nusa Penida" — it might say Banjar Nyuh, Buyuk, Sampalan or Kutampi. That's confusing when you're trying to arrange a driver or figure out how far you'll be from your hotel. Here's the plain-English version of what these harbours are and whether the difference matters.

Short answer

Nusa Penida doesn't have one big ferry terminal. Instead it has a cluster of small harbours and beach landings along its north coast, all fairly close together near the main town area. Which one you use is decided by your operator, not by you — so you generally pick your boat by schedule and price, then note which harbour it lands at for your onward transfer.

The harbours, west to east

HarbourWhere on the islandGood to know
Banjar NyuhNorth-westThe westernmost of the four — closest to the west-coast viewpoints and the Nusa Lembongan connection; parking and waiting drivers
BuyukNorth, near SampalanHandy for the main town of Sampalan and the east side
KutampiNorth coastA mainland-facing landing between Buyuk and the eastern beaches
SampalanNorth-east (main town)Central for services, ATMs and the eastern viewpoints like Diamond Beach

All four sit on the same north-facing coastline, the side that looks back towards Bali. None is far from the others by island standards, but Nusa Penida's roads are slow and rough, so a few kilometres can still mean a bumpy 20–30 minutes.

Does it actually matter which one?

For most visitors, not much — but here's when it does:

  • If you've pre-booked a driver or hotel transfer. Tell them the exact harbour your boat arrives at, or they'll wait in the wrong spot. This is the number-one cause of confused pickups on arrival. Your arrival harbour is shown against each departure on the Sanur → Nusa Penida page.
  • If you're heading straight to the west-coast sights. Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong are on the west/south-west. Landing at Banjar Nyuh puts you marginally closer to that side.
  • If you want the east side or the main town. Sampalan, Buyuk or Kutampi are more central for services and the eastern viewpoints like Diamond Beach and Atuh.
  • If you're hopping to Nusa Lembongan. The north-west harbours are closest to the Lembongan connection — see Sanur → Nusa Lembongan.

If you haven't arranged transport in advance, don't overthink it: drivers and scooter-rental touts wait at every harbour, and you can sort a ride on arrival.

How to choose your boat, then

Because the harbour is set by the operator, the sensible order is:

  1. Pick your departure by time and price. A morning boat gives the calmest crossing and the most island time.
  2. Note the arrival harbour shown with that departure.
  3. Give that harbour name to your driver or hotel, or just arrange a ride when you land.

A note on getting around once you land

Nusa Penida is bigger and wilder than most people expect, and the sights are spread out over rough roads. Whichever harbour you arrive at, you'll want transport for the day — a private driver, a scooter (only for confident riders; the roads are steep and rough), or a pre-booked tour. Plan this before you go rather than at the pier. For whether the island is even worth doing in a single day, see Nusa Penida: day trip or overnight?.

Quick summary

  • Nusa Penida has several north-coast harbours, not one terminal.
  • Your operator decides which you use — choose your boat by time and price.
  • The one thing that matters: tell your driver the exact arrival harbour.
  • North-west (Banjar Nyuh) = closest to the west-coast sights and Lembongan; central/east (Buyuk, Kutampi, Sampalan) = closer to town and the eastern beaches.
