Gili Islands to Bali by Fast Boat: How to Get Back (and Make Your Flight)

Getting to the Gilis gets all the attention, but the trip home is where plans go wrong: a last boat that left earlier than you thought, a landing port two hours from the airport, or a flight booked too tight. This guide covers the journey back to Bali from Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno — departure times, which Bali port to choose, check-in on the islands, and the honest answer on same-day flights.

When do boats leave the Gilis?

Departures back to Bali run from early morning to mid-afternoon:

Times shift with the season — some departures only run part of the year — so check the live list for your date rather than relying on last year's timetable. Our guide to what time the Gili boats leave explains the pattern.

Which Bali port should you land at?

Where you land matters more on the way back than on the way out, because it decides how long you spend in a car afterwards.

Landing portRoughly to the airport (DPS)Good for
Padang Bai (east)1½–2 hours by roadUbud, Candidasa, Amed; the shortest boat ride
Sanur (south)30–45 minutesSanur, Seminyak, Canggu, Kuta, the airport
Nusa Dua (far south)20–30 minutesNusa Dua, Jimbaran, Uluwatu, the airport
Serangan (south)20–30 minutesThe airport and south Bali

Padang Bai has the most departures and the shortest crossing, but it's on the far side of the island from most hotels. Sanur, Nusa Dua and Serangan mean a longer boat ride (boats often call at other islands on the way) but drop you minutes from the airport and the south-Bali resorts. See Gili Trawangan → Nusa Dua and Gili Trawangan → Serangan.

Can I catch a flight the same day?

Our honest advice: don't book an international flight on the same day as your boat. Fast boats are weather-dependent, the strait can delay departures, and Bali's roads add unpredictable time. Spend your last night in Bali — Sanur and Nusa Dua are both close to the airport.

If you truly have no choice:

  1. Take the earliest boat you can, and land at Sanur, Nusa Dua or Serangan to cut the drive.
  2. Leave a big buffer — at least 5–6 hours between the boat's scheduled arrival and your flight's departure.
  3. Pre-book your airport transfer so a driver is waiting at the harbour.
  4. Pick a later or flexible flight where possible, and keep your operator's contact details handy.

How check-in works on the islands

  • Your e-ticket is your booking. Show it (on your phone is fine) at your operator's check-in point near the harbour. The ticket tells you where and when to check in.
  • Arrive 30–45 minutes before departure. Island time is real, but boats leave on time.
  • Expect to get your feet wet. On the Gilis, boats often load from the beach, so wear sandals and keep valuables in a dry bag.
  • Luggage: a normal suitcase or backpack per person is standard; porters often carry bags to the boat.

Still on the island and need to get to the harbour? On car-free Gilis it's a walk, a bicycle or a horse cart — see getting around the Gili Islands.

Book your return before you leave Bali

The best time to sort the trip home is when you book the trip out. The afternoon boats back to Bali fill up fast in high season, and booking both legs together means your seat home is locked in and you only enter your passenger details once. On our search, just choose Return and pick both departures.

Prefer to keep it flexible? You can always book the way back separately later from Gili Islands → Bali — it takes a couple of minutes and the e-ticket arrives instantly.

Quick checklist

  • Check the last boat for your island and date — usually around 4 pm to Padang Bai.
  • Flying home? Land at Sanur, Nusa Dua or Serangan, and ideally fly the next day.
  • Arrive 30–45 minutes early with your e-ticket and sandals.
  • Book both legs together in high season.
